How do I get a higher rank?

What are the needs to get a higher rank? I am currently on rank 3, but I have no idea how I got up to this level. Is it cause of the Total SP or something else? What makes you get a higher rank?

Just based on total SP. The green progress bar on the top of the screen shows how close you are to the next level as well.
