Nope, the germans expected a quick win or die. Thats what they aimed and what they organized for. The winter of 1941-1942 was the coldest, harshest winter of the 20th century.
And yes, the winter was harsh on them. If you are an attacking force winter will get u nowhere. If you are a defensive force, winter will benefit you cuz u just hold your position. Furthermore, nazis had no fuel, no supplies etc. The soviets did, and they even had their eastern troops.
Overall its a combination of all that enforced each other. The main reason they lost the war was oil. Thats the reason ussr even had to be attacked, along with the ukrainian food lands and eastern lebensraum. Now if there is a cold winter and u have no petrol but u have motorized vehicles imagine how tough it must be to even get them to work. Ever had problems with starting ur engine in a cold winter, let alone the coldest winter of a century.
Furthermore, the winter also struck the soviets hard. For example leningrad, you can visit a mass grave there and see that almost a million civilians died due to harsh conditions of the winter, while being besieged.
So overall, its a combinations of many things. The russian did what they do best, retreat, burn the land and trade it for time. And the germans only planned for a quick victory, they didnt think about the winter nor the mud season in the spring. It's russian land, and the russians already knew how to deal with it and they did it well.

tell that to the fuhrer who thought he would be in moscow before winter. and the war will be over in a jiffy. mud becomes a major factor in the operation axis not in the eastern front. the eastern front was snow, it froze the oil in tanks, killed the horses which decreased movement and mobility.
